South Carolina ’s network of roads and highways provide it citizens and visitors with a high level of mobility, which enhances the quality of life in the state and supports South Carolina’s growing economy. But travel on the state’s roads and bridges continues to result in an unacceptable rate of traffic fatalities, with an average of one fatality occurring on South Carolina’ s roads and highways approximately every eight-and-a-half hours.
This report examines the causes of traffic fatalities and serious crashes in South Carolina and activities underway to improve traffic safety in the state. Also included in the report are steps that can be taken to further improve the safety of the state’s traveling public and its visitors.
